Your first hour in Ireland
Using an eSIM at Dublin Airport: arrival phone setup checklist
See Ireland eSIM plans before travelArrivals is the right place to confirm your data line and load the onward journey—not the kerb outside with a taxi waiting.
Dublin Airport documents free Wi-Fi in both terminals. That gives you a useful connection for checking an eSIM, opening current transport guidance and saving the accommodation address. It also means you do not have to buy mobile data simply to send the first message home.

Before you fly
Check the exact phone, carrier-lock status and selected plan’s activation rule while you still have dependable internet access. Install only on the phone that will use the eSIM, keep the QR code private and save the accommodation address and onward journey.
If mobile data is still needed, compare Ireland eSIM plans before travel.
Use the airport connection deliberately
Dublin Airport’s official guidance identifies the free network as Dublin Airport Wi-Fi and says no sign-up or registration is needed. Choose the named network in Wi-Fi settings and follow the connection screen. This article does not claim a tested speed or terminal signal measurement.
First-hour phone checklist
- Connect to the airport’s documented Wi-Fi network.
- Open the current airline or transfer information.
- Save the accommodation address and contact details offline.
- Select the intended mobile-data line.
- Keep home-line data roaming off unless the home plan requires it.
- Load current official onward-transport guidance.
- Test an ordinary webpage before leaving arrivals.
Confirm which line is using mobile data
A successfully installed eSIM is not necessarily the selected data line. Follow the phone manufacturer and plan instructions, choose the intended line for mobile data and review automatic data switching. Keeping an Irish or home line active does not make every call or text free.
Check the phone before purchaseIf mobile data does not connect
- Confirm the eSIM is switched on and selected for mobile data.
- Check whether data roaming is required for that eSIM line by its installation instructions.
- Review automatic data switching so the home line does not take over unexpectedly.
- Restart the connection or phone only after saving the issued installation details.
Do not delete the eSIM unless the supplier’s support instructions specifically tell you to do so; reinstallability is plan-specific.
Download maps and essentials before leaving Wi-Fi
Save the accommodation address, booking confirmations, important contacts and an offline map where supported. Offline information is a backup for weak coverage, not a substitute for current safety or transport updates.
Load the onward journey while connected
Airport transport details, fares and stops can change. Use the airport’s current official transport guidance rather than relying on a saved fare or bay number. Airport Wi-Fi may be enough for the first hour; mobile data becomes useful once you leave the terminal.
Review the Ireland route and offline-preparation guide if the journey continues beyond the main cities.
